Tour description: We will meet next to the Holocaust Memorial at 10:00, to start a tour which covers Berlin’s historical centre. The field of massive blocks is very impressive and a guide can help explain the many meanings behind the memorial. We will continue to the nearby Brandenburg Gate and Paris Square, where we will see Frank Gehry’s ‘best piece’ and the city residence of the Jewish Impressionist painter, Max Liebermann. Strolling down the grand boulevard Unter den Linden, your guide will point out classical sights like the State Opera, Humboldt University, the Old Armoury, the Berlin Cathedral and the Museum Island. We will stop along the way in Bebelplatz--the site of the infamous Book Burning in 1933. In the historic Jewish Quarter we will follow the trail of the 18th century ‘German Socrates’, Moses Mendelssohn. See the site of Berlin’s first synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery, Jewish High School and where the world’s first female rabbi lived. The 19th century New Synagogue with its magnificent golden dome is an absolute highlight. Now a museum of Berlin Jewish life, it also includes archives, a community centre and a chapel where services are held. We understand the mixed feelings that many people have about coming to Germany and we are prepared to do more than just "show you the sites;" we will also address the difficult issues that may arise on such a journey. Our guides have all specialized in Jewish history and are very well-acquainted with the city, its history and also with the Jewish community of today. | |||||
